Dublin Marathon organisers have confirmed that just over 47,000 applications were received for the 2026 ballot — the highest demand in the event’s history. A total of 17,200 runners have secured a place, with a near 50:50 split between first-time marathoners and returning runners.
Fairer access for new participants — including more women
While the number of general entry places remains consistent with 2025, the allocation method has changed. Previously, a 48-hour priority entry window for returning runners resulted in approximately 70% of places going to past participants, reducing opportunities for first-timers and for women. As returning runners have historically been predominantly male, this shift results in a more inclusive outcome, with hundreds more women set to be on the start line in 2026.
Race capacity and remaining entry categories
The race capacity is 22,500, agreed with statutory agencies to ensure safety and a high-quality participant experience. The remaining places will be allocated through:
· Charity entries: collectively helping raise an estimated €9 million annually for good causes · Good for Age entries: Application open to all runners meeting qualifying standards
· Elite entrants: Irish and international athletes under World Athletics elite road race status
· Sponsor and partner allocations: Reserved places that support long-standing partnerships, whose investment is essential to the successful delivery of the event.
· International sports tour operators: Provide guaranteed entry packages that help grow the event’s global reach.
· Community initiatives encouraging and supporting participation in underrepresented groups

With demand at an all-time high, we appreciate the disappointment for those who did not receive a place through the ballot. Charity places are currently available, and further places will be released through the refund and transfer windows later in the year.

Ballot fee supports system operation
To help offset the cost of operating a large-scale ballot, a €5 ballot fee is applied and clearly communicated during the application process. Successful entrants have this deducted from their entry fee, and any surplus is reinvested into the marathon.
